April, 2017 – Montecristo, placing artificial nests for the Storm Petrel

A few days ago, as planned under Action C3 of the project, a group of 20 storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) nests were located along the southern coast of the island of Montecristo; this species was believed to be extinct on the island and the rest of the Aarchipelago. An auditory attractor will transmit overnight, every other 15 minutes, the species’ typical call, similar to a cat purring. The breeding season of this rare sea bird, a little larger than a sparrow, ranges from May to August.
